Gilgamesh is really bonding with other family members showing excitement when they come home from work and comes up to the gate with a toy in his mouth requesting pets. We’ve had three vet visits since the last email and Gilgamesh has improved dramatically. Dr. Keppel and his staff congratulated us on how much progress Gil has made since we started seeing you guys at FVBS and how much we’ve turned him around.  There was a dog in the waiting room who started barking from his owner’s lap when he saw Gil going to the exit and Gil totally ignored him. Gil is also much better with the other family dogs now that he can walk in between them when we go on walks and everyone gets along fine. Thank you for everything again. Gil gets easier to manage every day it seems.

“Regan was surrendered by a family in Georgia and spent 2 months in a shelter before Atlanta Lab Rescue pulled him from the shelter.  He was vetted, neutered, and placed with a foster home for a few weeks when we met him and immediately decided to adopt him.

He was a calm and gentle Labrador Retriever, except when we took him out to walk and he saw other dogs.  Not every dog, but most dogs elicited a negative reaction from Regan. He would jump straight up in the air, spin, snarl, and growl.  Quite frightening to me and the other owners and dogs.

I contacted a trainer who told me you cannot train that out of a dog and to just realize that Regan would not have any “doggy” friends.  When I told my veterinarian about this, he referred me to Dr. Lisa Radosta, a veterinary behaviorist.  She came to our house and spent several hours with us and with Regan and taught us how to deal with his reactiveness.  We worked with him and did what she suggested and in a very short time, Regan turned around and became calm and friendly around other dogs.  He also reacted to golf carts and we were able to correct that behavior as well.

Recently, I took Regan to an orientation for Share-A-Pet, a pet therapy organization.  The room was full of people with their DOGS!  He was fine with all of them.  He was so well-behaved that they suggested he take the test to be a therapy dog and see how he did and HE PASSED on the first try!  Regan is now a therapy dog at Broward Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He visits the residents at least once a week and brings joy to a lot of people. I am grateful to Dr. Radosta because Regan now has the confidence to go anywhere and it is a pleasure to be able to take him with us and know that he is well behaved!”

“We have “special needs” dogs:  Bella is a five-year-old Boston Terrier who is afraid of feathers, balloons, fireworks, thunderstorms, is a resource guarder, has a history of fighting, and not so keen on her newest housemate,  Basha, who is our two-year-old pit mix rescue with reactive dog issues (she had to be sedated for her first vet appointment) and separation anxiety (over $300 worth of damage to items in our house).   The primary catalyst for contacting Dr. Radosta however was due to sibling fights:  Bella (our Boston) would initiate fights over toys and treats with Basha (our pit mix).   Even after a number of fights, and Bella losing all of them (not to mention the $500+ vet bills per each fight, and me getting injured in trying to break up the fights) we were left with three options: 1) Re-home one of the dogs; 2) euthanize the pit, or 3) get professional help/recommendation.  The first two options were out of the question, especially after having just lost our Yorkie the month prior.

Dr. Radosta provided us with a diagnosis and treatment plan with really clear instructions for training the dogs in a positive manner. I felt overwhelmed at first with all the re-training but determined to make positive changes. It took time, consistency, and commitment.  For a while, I had a vocabulary of six words: Sit, stay, down, watch, and leave it. My husband and I had to implement new house rules for the benefit of our dogs. Basha was enrolled in Dr. Radosta’s Reactive Dog class. She did fabulously, and I am much more confident walking her in our community and keeping her aggressive side at bay. [Recently while walking Basha we were charged by two other pit bulls. I was able to remain calm, and we averted a dangerous situation.]

Although not thrilled with the idea of medicating my dogs to help them with their individual anxiety issues, after trying an array of natural products, conceded to the medication; WHAT A DIFFERENCE!  Neither dog has lost her personality, both have a much more calm disposition, and a better quality of life.  And, the best part:  the dogs have gotten along!  We are at 6 months (and counting) of amicable housemates!!

Dr. Radosta came highly recommended by our vet, the Pet Emergency vets, and other qualified animal trainers.  I am sure I cried during our first appointment because of the serious nature of our doggy dilemma: dog fights.  [As I type our pit mix rescue is growling at a passerby; in a calm voice I said, “leave it,” and our pit walked over to me, left the passerby alone, and was rewarded. YEA!]  Dr. Radosta was professional, calm (I was a basket case), and direct.  From the first visit, we saw signs of hope.  What was most helpful to me, was feeling like I had an advocate, a coach, and a cheerleader!  I emailed Dr. Radosta on a daily if not weekly basis updating her on observations of our dogs, and asking a million questions to help be a better handler to my pups.  Dr. Radosta was not only prompt with her replies, but she affirmed me for all my hard work, giving me the encouragement and advice I needed to continue to help my four-legged kids. We have worked with Dr. Radosta for a year now – the result:  a much more confident me, and two content and well-managed dogs.”

“Please, help us, we can’t go on like this anymore!”  I believe that summarizes our initial panic call to Doctor Radosta.  Our family rescued a troubled dog who was suffering from just about every anxiety and aggression you could imagine and her fear of thunderstorms repeatedly left her and our home physically scarred.  We were on the brink of giving up ourselves when we received a lifeline from our vet.  ‘Go see Doctor Radosta’ he said.  “If anyone can reach this dog, it’s going to be her” he advised.  We were skeptical…for about 2  seconds!  Her work with our dog was life-altering for our entire family.  She gave us the tools we needed to bring our dog out of her fear-based world and into a world where wonderful things were waiting for her.  The process was long and hard for such a troubled pooch but she started to respond almost instantaneously to Doctor Radosta and her techniques.  Our dog is completely different today.  She is relaxed, happy, trustful of others and her aggression went out the door with her fears.  Our vet was right, Doctor Radosta is a miracle worker!”

“I have referred numerous clients from my busy dog training business to Dr. Radosta.  Without exception, they have raved about her strategy for handling their aggressive or fear-filled pooch.  Dr. Radosta has an easiness about her that infuses both pet and pet owners with the confidence they need to succeed.  Her ability to reach even the most troubled canine student is nothing short of miraculous.  She consistently shows me that both dogs and owners are exceedingly receptive and responsive to her instruction.  Whether you’re a professional or a pet owner, Dr. Radosta is one resource you should keep in your rolodex.”

“I truly believe that Dr. Radosta saved my dog’s life.  At the time that I consulted her, Vinnie was a two-year-old puppy (a Doberman) who was sweet, funny, lovable, and beautiful.  However, he had bitten me on three separate occasions.  He’s the fifth Doberman I’ve owned and this had never happened before.  Most curious was the fact that he was in no way an aggressive dog and each time he bit me, it almost seemed to happen without his knowing it,  and he would run off to another room and sit in a corner shaking. When it happened for the third time. I was devastated, felt betrayed, and feared I’d have to give him away (but to whom after he had bitten me) or worse —  would have to put him down — unthinkable.

My vet told me about Dr. R. and the kind of work she did.  I myself am a psychoanalyst and the thought of going to her was both fascinating and gave me hope. I was impressed by the detailed and very long questionnaire I had to fill out before seeing her and further impressed by how apparent it was that she had read and integrated all that I had written into her thinking — even before seeing the dog.  Vinnie, Dr. R. an assistant, and I spend two and a half hours together, during which time she observed Vinnie and thought out loud about what she was observing.  She modified her thinking several times as she gathered more data and finally indicated that he was essentially a dog who became hyper-reactive when overstimulated and not given enough personal space.  While my interaction with him had been fine with my previous four dogs, it was wrong for Vinnie.   She gave me a long list of recommendations, two books, and a video.  In the past year, I’ve carried out all of the recommendations (which were challenging to me) but have been rewarded with a calm dog whom everyone loves.  While Dr. R. told me that he would never become cuddly (that was OK with me as long as I could keep him) he surprisingly has become like velcro with most people.  At least once a day, I look at him, alive and in my house and I silently thank Dr. Radosta for making it possible for me to keep the best dog I’ve ever had.”

“I adopted Teddy when he was about a year old.  Soon after I adopted him, I noticed that he would become very reactive around strangers (barking, growling, lunging, etc.).  We went through some basic obedience training, but over time his reactivity began to intensify and he started becoming very aggressive with other dogs (and he had played great with all other dogs when I first got him).  The trainers at Very Important Paws recommended I contact a veterinary behaviorist and I found Dr. Radosta online.

Dr. Radosta diagnosed Teddy as having fear-based reactivity and recommended a number of training exercises to help me have better control over Teddy and also help counter condition Teddy to be less fearful around certain stimuli.  Although the training really helped me control Teddy better, he was still becoming highly aroused to the same stimuli so Dr. Radosta recommended we try a medication to help Teddy.

Between the training and medication, Teddy has improved dramatically.  We can walk past people without Teddy reacting and Teddy doesn’t bark and growl at people in the elevator in our building anymore.  We have had 2 appointments with Dr. Radosta and participated in one of her 6-week reactive dog classes and I am very pleased with the progress Teddy has made.”

Because of the success, we had with Jack I also took our cat, Oliver, to see Dr. Radosta as he had begun eliminating outside the litter box.  We followed her suggestions and that problem was immediately resolved.   Following her other suggestions has also improved Oliver’s life, which in turn has made our household a much happier one.

We are so grateful to Dr. Radosta for all of her help.  Not only is she extremely good at what she does, but it’s also clearly evident how much she cares – She stays in touch, follows up, answers every and any question, and never makes you feel like you are an imposition.  We really appreciate everything she has done for us.

I was referred to Dr. Radosta by my vet when my dog Stanley’s anxiety had reached an all-time high. Stanley was unable to be crated in my absence as he would bite the cage and break his teeth or paw at the crate until his footpads were bloodied. He shook uncontrollably whenever we got in the car or he had a grooming or vet appointment. He sat at my front door all day and barked at passing dogs. When on a leash, he “snapped” when another dog approached. He was earning a reputation in the neighborhood as a “mean dog”. I was truly desperate when I called Dr. Radosta for a consultation.  She evaluated Stanley and gave me a detailed plan including behavioral modification and medication.  I learned that many of Stanley’s behaviors were attributable to my own actions and that I was, in essence, reinforcing his bad behaviors. After nine months of working with Dr. Radosta, Stanley is not perfect, but as a proud “Dog Mom” I can say he IS getting there. My regular vet could not believe Stanley was the same dog when we came in for his latest exam. Stanley rested on the floor and was not nervous. He was relaxed despite receiving vaccines in a room separated from me.  He no longer “freaks out” when I leave and his on-leash reactivity to other dogs is greatly reduced. I feel like I can walk him and not be completely humiliated by his outbursts since I am generally in control of him and can see when he is becoming uncomfortable. I can truly say I have a happier dog and a much-improved relationship with him because of Dr. Radosta and her amazing clinical and behavioral experience.”

“As a veterinarian, I see many behavior issues. One of the most frustrating and depressing ones that I see are older dogs who have developed Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. It’s very heartbreaking when your pet becomes anxious and doesn’t enjoy activities or even seem to recognize you. Recently, my 14.5-year-old pitbull, Jake’s, mental health began to deteriorate rapidly. He was constantly anxious, would pace relentlessly for hours, and showed no interest in activities he loved in the past. Jake has cancer and my fear was that it had metastasized to his brain. I thought I would have to euthanize him because his quality of life was terrible. I refer a fair number of my patients to Dr. Radosta so I gave her a call. She became my hero that day. I was extremely upset and emotional and she showed me such compassion. She understood that I didn’t want to put Jake on any strong medications that could affect his already compromised body. She explained that he was showing signs of cognitive dysfunction and was also exhibiting separation anxiety, which he had a problem with when he was young. She recommended some oral supplements to try and some activities to help regulate his sleep/wake cycle which had become altered. To my amazement, I had my Jake back 10 days after starting the supplements/activities.

I realize that my time with Jake is borrowed as he has a terminal disease. But Dr. Radosta gave me my dog back, even if it is only for a short while. Her recommendations are the reason he is with me right now and we are working daily on fulfilling his “bucket list”. Thank you so much, Dr. Radosta. You have no idea what you did for Jake and me.”

Seele was like no other puppy I had ever owned in my lifetime. She was not a warm and fuzzy, lick face puppy that we all dream to own. She was skittish, afraid of a blowing leaf, people, children just to name a few of her “issues”.  When I walked her, I never knew what to expect or do when she reacted to something, and trust me-on any given day she was afraid of something. I felt inadequate as her owner as I couldn’t work her through her stress and walking her became a giant stress ball for both of us. I took the Reactive Dog Class taught by Dr. Radosta, at Lucky Dog Sports Club. She not only provided individual assistance to address each dog’s issues but also provided a wealth of knowledge and tools for me the handler, enabling me to gain confidence in handling Seele. Seele’s reactions are minimal now because Dr. Radosta taught me the “pre-reaction” signs to look for and we can now avoid going into a full-blown reaction. I now have the confidence in handling Seele through any situation that may arise. Thanks, Dr. Radosta!”

“I have been through Dr. Radosta’s Reactive Dog Class with each of my dogs as well as private consultations with my two miniature poodles. Even though they are well trained and compete in AKC competition obedience, I had some difficult problems with them. It got to the point that my husband wanted to either put Zippy to sleep or place him (which was not an option with his temperament and age). Her reactive dog classes were amazing.  Watching how all the dogs progressed from week to week was wonderful. She gave me tools to use for managing their reactive issues. The exercises were very simple  to learn and use. Both of my dogs responded very well. When I had additional problems I met with her privately and again she gave me some helpful tools as well as medicine to manage Zippy. He is so improved and now my husband has even commented “What a nice dog Zippy is” thank you so much Dr. Radosta for caring and helping us.”

“Upon the recommendation of our vet I took our dog, Jack,  to see Dr. Radosta. Jack has storm phobia and it was heartbreaking to see him so petrified every storm and watch him get progressively worse. I am happy to say that with Dr. Radosta’s help Jack has improved dramatically with storms and is making progress with his noise fear and fear-related aggression. I know because of his generalized anxiety he will probably always be a work in progress but I am confident that under Dr. Radosta’s care we can overcome his problems to keep him a happy and well-adjusted dog.”

“My dog Jake is the sweetest dog I have ever owned.  That is as long as he was in our house, with his familiar family.  When he was placed in an unfamiliar situation, such as the veterinarian’s office or on a walk passing by strange dogs or people, then he became a completely different dog.  He showed signs of aggression to the point that I was unable to even walk him in my own neighborhood without complications.  After working with Dr. Radosta and working within her reactive dog class, Jake is not only a better-behaved dog, but he is a happier dog.  Dr. Radosta saw that Jake was stressed by these unfamiliar stressors and found ways that we could work with him effectively to minimize his stress and outbursts.  I can walk him throughout the neighborhood now and even took him to the veterinarian the other day without any problems.  Dr. Radosta knows animals, she obviously is well educated, trained, and has a soft spot in her heart for them; but most importantly, she knows how to work with the animal and their owner to get the best result for them both.  Thank you Dr. Radosta for making both Jake and my life much happier!”

“When we brought in Maya from the shelter, we knew we were in for a lot of work. But we thought it would be the basic potty training, eating the furniture and chewing expensive shoe type of work. We never thought it was going to be aggression-related, trying to bite my stepkids, who never owned a dog before, kind of work. We tried everything from reading everything out there, getting “invaluable dis-information” from perfect dog owners to a basic obedience trainer. And that was when my vet, after getting one of those looks we were already getting used to, recommended Dr. Radosta. My husband needed a little convincing as he had never heard of a little mutt needing a “psychiatrist” but he finally realized something needed to be done, mainly after being told, more than once that, no matter what, the dog is staying! So we did make the appointment for Maya, a stray pit mix, who, we came to find out, basically needed a translator – well, maybe more of a mediator at that point. And this is what Dr. Radosta was: a translator, a mediator, sometimes a marriage counselor, and most of the times a crime-stopper between should I go after my stepkids or after my dog. And she did it with patience, with humor, and with more patience. By email, by phone, on any given day of the week, and at any given time of the day (or night). And because of Dr. Radosta here we are today, a happy family with stepkids and a dog, all in the same house, and all in one piece even after playing catch in the backyard. Thank you so much for bringing me to where I am today – I don’t think you will ever know the extent of what you did….”

“I adopted Hazel, a German Shepherd mix when she was 8 weeks old from a local shelter.  Hazel was a little shy at first.  As time passed, Hazel started showing signs of aggression toward strangers and other dogs for what seemed to be no reason.  I thought I was an experienced dog owner and could fix the problem myself with love and obedience classes but nothing was working.  Unfortunately, the problem got worse and my wonderful, loving puppy became Cujo.  I felt like I had failed my dog.

It’s not easy to live with a dog that has serious behavior problems so, by the time I met Dr. Radosta, I was emotionally drained but not willing to give up on the dog I loved.  Dr. Radosta quickly recognized that Hazel was not a bad dog and I was not a bad owner.  Hazel was diagnosed as a very fearful dog exhibiting fear-based aggression. Dr. Radosta helped me understand why Hazel was behaving the way she was and guided us through every step of the treatment process of changing Hazel’s behavior.  I enjoyed working with Dr. Radosta because she always explained what was going on.  She also had a talent for developing realistic ways to help my dog which were not only based on scientific knowledge but also practical for me to do.

I am so grateful to Dr. Radosta for showing me how to help my dog, Hazel.  The support and practical guidance and insight we got from Dr. Radosta helped me build a strong bond with Hazel.  Hazel is now 7 years old and doing extremely well.”

“Before I met Dr. Radosta, I was truly at a wit’s end… My dog turned aggressive and I didn’t know what to do.  My vet recommended Dr. Radosta. With explicit detailed information provided via a questionnaire, visits with Dr. Radosta, staying in close touch, and follow-ups, my dog began to improve.  During each consultation, things kept improving and the click concept is an excellent tool to use.   After a few months, my dog still needed further help and Dr. Radosta was there for me and my loving little guy.   She knew exactly what the next step was for him. I wasn’t aware animals could be treated with medication for behavioral issues.  Dr. Radosta not only helped my dog, but I have also learned a great deal throughout this process and she is always there for support and guidance.  I am so thankful to Dr. Radosta and all her help.   Without her excellent expertise and caring for animals I just don’t know what I would have done.  I am enjoying my little guy and he is enjoying his life. My sincere thanks to Dr. Radosta.”

“Dr. Radosta literally saved the life of my beautiful Springer Spaniel Sophie.  When we moved to Florida two years ago, Sophie had a hard time adjusting, and unfortunately, she bit someone on the beach.  My husband and I took her to a veterinarian who had been recommended by a friend; without even touching her or examining her, this vet declared that she had “springer rage,” that it was incurable and we would have to put her to sleep.  We were completely devastated and I spent the next several days crying in my bed.

Thankfully, we got another opinion and the second, wise and fabulous vet referred us to Dr. Radosta.  We spent several hours with Dr. Radosta, who diagnosed Sophie’s problems as fear-aggression and separation anxiety, both of which are manageable.  She assured us that Sophie is a wonderful dog and could absolutely be helped.  We went home with so much more knowledge of our dog’s behavior and plenty of handouts and exercises.  We worked with Sophie consistently and regularly based on Dr. Radosta’s instructions and today she is a different dog — happy, less fearful, loving, and full of life.  We are still careful with her but she has never bitten again and continues to thrive.  We are so grateful to Dr. Radosta — she is Sophie’s heroine!!”

“Although Dr. Radosta has very good scholastic credentials, it was her love of the animals that attracted us to her.  We could tell she truly cared about the well-being of our dogs at our first meeting. Her observations and constructive criticism have helped us to re-integrate our K9 family.

Before we found Dr. Radosta, we were frustrated by the aggressive behavior of our young male Doberman toward his sire.  We had read all the trendy books on dog training.  We had tried just about every technique these books suggested but the problems between the two dogs continued and became even worse. We couldn’t even have the two males in the same room together.  We just wanted to be able to live in peace in our own home without the stress of waiting for the next attack to occur.

After many months of working with us, Dr. Radosta taught us how to relate to the dogs. She showed us how they were communicating with each other.  We learned their body language. We learned that the young male responds inappropriately to other dogs and how to re-direct his aggressive tendencies.  Both dogs are able to co-exist now. Although they will probably never be able to be together without our supervision, life is a lot easier for us since we no longer have to keep them in separate rooms all the time

If you love your pet enough to change your own behavior,  if you make training your animal a top priority, if you remain consistent in your training routine, Dr. Radosta will help you get the results you are looking for.”

“He is such a happier boy and it is a joy to see him.  With my friends who are often at the house, they call us as they are getting close, we go outside, both dogs ‘sit’ till they park the car, and then they both run to greet them. This is quite the change for Paco, indeed.  When we are out in the yard and a ‘stranger’ is out there, Paco retreats and sits quietly at the door waiting to go in, no charging, no barking. When we are walking he is calm.  I still ask people not to reach for him.  He sometimes approaches them for pats, especially if Rainha is getting some loving, but sometimes he just comes and sits by me.  Both responses as fine with me. I am so grateful for the help, instructions, and encouragement you gave me.  I still do ‘touch’ exercises to keep ‘the game’ going and fresh in his mind.  I know I will always have to be cautious with Paco, but we made it through all the visits from family up north without incident and I think he is feeling much more confident and happy.”

My precious little boxer girl Chrissy “Pants” has been a patient of Dr. Radosta’s since January of 2008.  Over the period of time since then, our lives have changed significantly for the better.  Not only did Dr. Radosta give us medication to alleviate symptoms, but she gave us training advice and helpful hints as well as a true shoulder when we needed her.  “Pants” suffers from compulsive/aggressive disorder, and focuses her fury on our oldest boxer, Rosie, which has made our lives very difficult.  Dr. Radosta has given us many alternatives and ways to take control back in our home, not just one solution, which has been the true difference for us. We have felt much more in control with Dr. Radosta leading us through this time in our lives with her vast knowledge, expert advice, and most importantly, her unending compassion.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Dr. Radosta for all you do and all of your support!!”

“I called Dr. Radosta hoping that she would be able to get to the root cause of my male cat’s urinating in my house.  Dr. Radosta came out to my house and after a few hours of getting acquainted with my cat and his surroundings, she produced a course of treatment from which I learned a lot about feline behavior and I am thrilled to say that my kitty no longer urinates outside the litter box and is a much happier cat.  He does have an occasional mishap (maybe once every five or six months or so) but for the most part, I am completely satisfied with how Dr. Radosta helped us all.  I know many cats (especially male) are put down because of urinating problems and I feel great that I was able to help my cat instead of putting him to sleep.”

“We called Dr. Radosta after being referred by our primary vet. Our boy cat had recently passed away and we had decided to adopt a kitten, Teddy, as a playmate for our female cat, Nala. Nala was always a fearful and skittish cat, but after both the death of Orion and the presence of the new kitten in the household, her behavior became worse and she began showing aggression towards the new kitten and to us. We were immediately pleased with Dr. Radosta’s knowledge and patience and with her ongoing help, the situation has improved. She is extremely thorough and detail-oriented and really strived to understand the background of the animal(s) and the owner(s). With her assistance and suggestions, we were able to make changes to the living environment and better enrich the lives of our pets, and they are now on their way to being able to live peacefully together. We highly recommend Dr. Radosta to anyone looking for a veterinarian behaviorist.”

“We were at wit’s end…and so was our vet.  What was a quirky puppy became a stressed, neurotic dog to the point we did not know where to turn.  We even got a consultation from the behavior division of a major veterinary university.  We tried everything they recommended with only minimal improvement. Dr. Radosta was our last hope.  She came to our house and spent a couple of hours with the entire family. I can’t imagine how much time she had already spent reviewing our dog’s medical records and the extensive questionnaire. She made recommendations, gave practical demonstrations, and emailed us her consultation so that we had it for review.  She kept in close email touch with us so she could taper our dog’s treatment plan according to his responses.  Our dog fell in love with her and we saw results almost immediately. Whenever he had a backslide or a new problem, she was never discouraged and always had new ideas for us. And it worked!!!  We are enjoying our dog and he is enjoying life. I can’t recommend her highly enough. As a pediatrician, I found it hysterical when she said that managing her toddler’s behavior has a lot in common with managing animal behavior!”
